If you have ever fought a hard-water ring, mineral buildup, rust staining, or calcium scale with a pumice stick by hand, you may have eventually had the same thought I did:

Why isn’t there a pumice stone made to run on a drill?

People search for things like pumice drill bit, pumice drill attachment, drill-powered pumice, and pool pumice drill because the idea makes intuitive sense. A cordless drill already provides controlled rotation. Pumice is already a useful abrasive for certain stubborn mineral deposits.

The challenge is making the two work together as an actual tool.

That is what led to TurboStone.

Pumice, Rebuilt for the Job

TurboStone is not simply a natural pumice stone with a shaft glued into it.

It is an engineered pumice body formed around an internal drive structure so rotational force can be transferred from a standard variable-speed cordless drill into the stone.

The pumice body is also designed specifically for wet use.

When fully wetted, water can move through the interconnected porous structure of the stone. During rotation, that stored water helps maintain a wet working surface while the pumice gradually renews itself.

That controlled wear is important.

An abrasive tool does not necessarily become better simply because it becomes harder. If the working surface never renews, it can eventually become less conforming to the surface underneath it.

TurboStone is therefore available in several different wear behaviors rather than one universal formulation.

What Is StoneLife?

TurboStone uses a five-level system called StoneLife.

StoneLife describes the balance between how quickly the stone wears, how much wet pumice paste it produces, and how strongly it retains its original shape.

SL1 — Highest Paste
StoneLife 1/5 • Paste 5/5
The fastest-wearing version with the greatest paste production.

SL2 — Balanced
StoneLife 2/5 • Paste 4/5
More working life while still producing meaningful pumice paste.

SL3 — Firm
StoneLife 3/5 • Paste 2–3/5
Slower controlled wear with stronger shape retention.

SL4 — Heavy Duty
StoneLife 4/5 • Paste 1/5
Low paste production and long working life for more sustained cleaning.

SL5 — Extreme
StoneLife 5/5 • Paste 0–1/5
The slowest-wearing TurboStone with maximum relative shape retention.

Lower StoneLife versions release more material and create more paste. Higher StoneLife versions wear more slowly.

Neither end of the scale is automatically better. They simply behave differently.

Why Keep Pumice Wet?

TurboStone is designed to be fully wetted before powered use.

Water does more than wet the outside of the stone. The porous aggregate body can hold water internally and move it through connected pathways.

During cleaning, that water helps keep the working interface wet and carries loosened pumice and mineral debris away from the contact area.

Lower StoneLife formulations can also create a visible wet pumice paste as they wear.

TurboStone should not be operated dry.

Three TurboStone Shapes

Different cleaning jobs also benefit from different shapes.

TurboStone Classic

The compact tapered cone is the original TurboStone shape. Its smaller size and pointed profile make it useful for curved surfaces, toilet bowls, edges, concentrated deposits, and general mineral cleaning.

TurboStone Beef Cone

The Beef Cone keeps the tapered profile while providing approximately 37% more working volume than the Classic.

It gives the user more pumice for longer jobs while retaining the ability to work into curved and concentrated areas.

TurboStone Wide Load

Wide Load is shorter and broader.

It was developed for larger contact areas, steadier side-pressure work, and more sustained cleaning jobs. The SL4 Heavy Duty version is the recommended starting point in the TurboStone lineup for pool calcium and mineral-scale work.

What Can a Drill-Powered Pumice Tool Be Used For?

Depending on the surface, shape, and selected StoneLife, drill-powered pumice may be useful for stubborn deposits including:

  • Hard-water rings

  • Mineral buildup

  • Rust staining

  • Limescale

  • Toilet bowl rings

  • Calcium scale

  • Durable glazed porcelain

  • Vitreous china

  • Durable glazed ceramic

  • Certain pool tile and mineral-scale applications

Pumice is abrasive, and surfaces vary.

Always test a small inconspicuous area first. Stop if you see scratching, dulling, or another unwanted change to the surface.

You Do Not Need a High-Speed Drill

TurboStone is designed for a standard variable-speed cordless drill.

More speed is not automatically better.

Low to moderate speed with light to moderate pressure gives the user control and helps the stone remain wet during use.

Impact drivers are not recommended. Their impact mechanism and abrupt loading are unnecessary for this type of abrasive tool.

For pool or other wet-area cleaning, the TurboStone itself can be wet, but the drill and battery should remain out of the water.

Why Not Just Use a Pumice Stick by Hand?

For a small deposit, hand pumice may be perfectly adequate.

The reason for putting pumice on a drill is not that traditional pumice suddenly stopped working. It is that repetitive hand scrubbing can become slow and tiring when the deposit is stubborn or the cleaning area gets larger.

A powered tool lets rotation provide much of the repetitive motion while the user controls position and pressure.

TurboStone was developed to turn that simple idea into a complete wet-use tool rather than an improvised pumice block attached to a drill.

A Tool That Is Supposed to Wear

One unusual thing about TurboStone is that wear is not automatically a failure.

TurboStone is a consumable abrasive.

As the working surface gradually wears, new pumice is exposed. The amount of that wear depends heavily on the selected StoneLife, the cleaning surface, pressure, speed, and duration of use.

When the internal black drive structure becomes exposed, powered use should stop. Remaining pumice can still be removed and used manually for small touch-ups.

The Idea Is Still Being Tested and Improved

TurboStone is manufactured in small batches in Iowa, and the product has evolved considerably through testing and customer feedback.

Different applications have pushed the development of firmer formulations, new internal structures, larger shapes, and the StoneLife system itself.

That process is continuing.
